Sow achillea seeds in containers, trays or modules and lightly cover with a thin sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal. Or if preferred place the container in a propagator.
Keep the container in a lit area, achillea seeds need light to help with germination.
Once germination has started remove the container from the bag or propagator. Move to a location with good daylight and reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost.
When the young plant's are large enough to handle prick out the strongest seedlings to one per 7 - 10 cm diameter pot.
Grow on in a cool location with good daylight exposure. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
When the plants are a good size and all risk of frost has passed, plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out, this will allow the plants time to acclimatise to the outdoor conditions slowly.
Autumn sown achillea should be overwintered in a cold frame or greenhouse. Plant out the following spring after all risk of frost has passed.
For best results start the plants indoors.
To help prevent damage from winds, stake the plants as they grow taller.
After 2 - 3 years the plants will start to loose their vigour. To help prevent this, lift and divide larger clumps in spring. This should be repeated every 2 - 3 years.
To encourage more flowers to grow in late summer remove the faded achillea flowers.
