When grown as a green manure, for best results the plants should be cut down before flowering. Under the correct conditions alfalfa can fix nitrogen from the air in nodules found in their roots.

  • Can be left to cover bare areas over the winter months.
  • Grows well in dry conditions.

Water the newly sown seeds well.

Growing On

Water the young seedlings well until established.
Established alfalfa can tolerate dry conditions.

Digging In

Cut and dig in the plants anytime before flowering. The plants should be green and fresh looking.
Cut with a garden spade, sheers or if the area is large, cut the plants with a strimmer.
Leave on the surface to wilt for a few days. After this time, dig into the soil using a sharp spade or rotovator to around 20 - 25 cm deep.
Leave the green manure to decompose in the soil for at least 4 - 5 weeks before growing any vegetables in the soil.

TIP

If some alfalfa plants are left to flower, they will attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects into the garden.
