Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow alyssum seeds onto damp compost in containers, trays or modules. Lightly firm down the seeds but do not cover.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal. Or if preferred place the container in a propagator.
Keep the container in a well lit area, alyssum seeds need light to help with germination.
Once germination has started remove the container from the bag or propagator. Move to a location with good daylight and reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost.
When the young alyssum's are large enough to handle prick out the strongest seedlings to one per 7.5 cm diameter pot.
Grow on in a cool location with good daylight.
Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
When the plants are a good size and all risk of frost has passed, plant out into their final growing position.
Harden off the plants over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce the chances of shock.

Direct Sowing

Alyssum seeds can be sown directly outdoors in early to mid May (depending on the weather). Sow in a well prepared seed bed. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 25 - 30 cm apart.

Growing On

Trim the plants lightly after flowering to maintain compactness.
Water well until the plants are established.

To produce flowers the same year as sowing, sow early in February under glass.
