Alyssum Montanum Gold is a mat forming low growing perennial with rosettes of small oblong grey-green leaves. During the summer months it produces an abundance of pretty and highly fragrant soft lemon coloured flowers. This variety is ideal for the front of the herbaceous borders.

This plant isn't too fussy about the soil type and conditions it grows in however as with most plants, to help with moisture retention it would benefit from having some organic matter adding to the area a few weeks before sowing or planting. Remove weeds, especially perennial weeds from the area.

Sow alyssum seeds onto damp compost in containers, trays or modules. Lightly firm down the seeds but do not cover.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal. Or if preferred place the container in a propagator.
Keep the container in a well lit area, alyssum seeds need light to help with germination.
Once germination has started remove the container from the bag or propagator. Move to a location with good daylight and reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost.
When the young alyssum's are large enough to handle prick out the strongest seedlings to one per 7.5 cm diameter pot.
Grow on in a cool location with good daylight.
Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
When the plants are a good size and all risk of frost has passed, plant out into their final growing position.
Harden off the plants over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce the chances of shock.
Alyssum seeds can be sown directly outdoors in early to mid May (depending on the weather). Sow in a well prepared seed bed. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 25 - 30 cm apart.
Trim the plants lightly after flowering to maintain compactness.
Water well until the plants are established.
To produce flowers the same year as sowing, sow early in February under glass.
