Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist but not sodden compost in trays, pots or modules.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkling of vermiculite or fine compost.
Place in a propagator or if preferred place in a clear polythene bag and seal. Do not exclude light as the seeds need light to germinate. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Avoid overwatering. The compost should be kept slightly dry.
Once the seeds have started to germinate remove from the propagator or bag and place in cooler but not cold conditions. Protect the young seedlings from frost.
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame, keeping the compost moist but not sodden.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock.
For best results sow the seeds indoors.
Water the young plants well until established.
Water established plants frequently in dry conditions.
If the plants become tired and untidy, trim with garden shears to encourage a new flush of growth.
Protect the plants over the winter months by applying a generous mulch of compost in late autumn.
To keep the plants vigorous and to avoid overcrowding lift and divide established balm lemon plants in spring.
Harvesting of leaves can start as soon as the plants are a good size and are growing strong.
The leaves can be dried or frozen for winter use.
Lemon balm will self seed and spread vigorously. To prevent this dead-head fading flowers regularly.
