Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow moluccella seeds on the surface of moist compost in trays, modules or pots.
Lightly cover the seeds with fine compost or vermiculite.
To germinate place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or place in a propagator. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
If after 30 days the seeds have not germinated place the container in a fridge at around 4°c for 2 - 3 weeks. After this time place the container back in the propagator or bag to germinate for a further 2 - 3 weeks.
As soon as germination starts remove from the propagator or sealed bag and place in a lit area with a slightly reduced temperature.
Keep the compost moist however avoid overwatering.
As soon as the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in frost free conditions. Plant out when the plants are strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out it is important to harden off the plants over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water well until established.
To dry, simply harvest the spikes in dry weather during September. Hang the spikes upside down in a dry location. Ensure there is good ventilation between each flower spike so that each spike dries evenly and thoroughly.
These flower spikes when dry turn a golden yellow colour and can be left as they are or if preferred they can be sprayed with a little festive colours!

TIP

The strong sturdy tall stems should not require staking unless the location is exposed or windy.
