Sow 2 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts the plants will need less heat and as much daylight as possible. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin out to one strong seedling per module. 2 - 3 weeks later plant out at the distance suggested above (harden off first over 7 - 10 days).
When planting out set the plants about 2 - 3 cm deeper into the ground to what they were growing in the modules. Firm the soil around each plant as brassicas dislike loose soil. Water well and cover with fine insect mesh or a cloche/fleece if the weather is cold.
When direct sowing brussels sprouts it is best to start them in a well prepared seed bed, then in a few weeks the young plants can be transplanted into their final position. Sow 1 seed every 3 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. To avoid problems from brassica pests cover the crop at this stage with fine insect mesh.
When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 9 cm between each plant, keep the strongest plants, discard the weak. The young plants will be ready to transplant into their final growing position when they are 8 - 10 cm tall. Water the plants well the day before transplanting to help reduce stress. Transplant at the distance suggested above.
When transplanting set the plants about 2 - 3 cm deeper into the ground to what they were growing in the seed bed. Firm the soil around each transplant as brassicas dislike loose soil. Water well and cover with fine insect mesh or a cloche/fleece if the weather is cold.
Hoe regularly to keep weeds under control. Water well especially in dry weather. The plants will benefit from a mulch of compost to help keep the soil moist during hot summer weather. Keep an eye on pests. Prevention is key, it is highly recommended to grow all brassicas under fine insect mesh especially during the summer months as pests can spoil a heathy crop in no time.
If fine mesh is used ensure the mesh does not touch the plants otherwise pests such as the cabbage butterfly will lay its eggs through the mesh.
Sprouts form very slowly on the stem. The lowest sprouts are normally poor in quality and it may be best to remove them before they reach maturity along with any yellowing leaves. Harvesting can begin when the sprouts at the base of the stem have grown to just under walnut size, they should be firm and the sprout leaves should be tight. Snap the sprout off with a sharp downward tug or if preferred cut with a sharp knife. Start harvesting from the bottom of the stem as these sprouts will be the largest, steadily working up the stem with every harvest.
It is recommended to remove any yellow leaves so that the crop is not spoilt when the leaves droop down and start to rot. When all the sprouts have been harvested cut the cabbage like 'sprout top' off the stem and use like a cabbage. Before composting chop the stem into small pieces otherwise it can take a long time to compost.
Sometimes birds especially pigeons get a taste for the leaves. To protect, cover the crop with mesh or bird netting. Ensure the mesh does not touch the plants otherwise the pigeons will simply land on the mesh and eat the plants through it.
