Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Burnet dislikes being transplanted. To reduce the chance of damaging the roots, sow direct.

Direct Sowing

Scatter the seeds over a well prepared seedbed in spring where the plants are to flower. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Lightly rake over to cover the seeds.
Water well.
Thin the seedlings to 30 cm apart.

Growing On

Water young burnet plants well until established.
Water established plants well in dry weather.
To keep the plants productive and to reduce overcrowding lift and divide the established plants in early spring.

Harvesting

Harvesting can start as soon as the plants are established and are growing strong.
If the plants are picked regularly burnet can supply the kitchen with fresh tender leaves for most of the year.
In hot summers the leaves can become very bitter in flavour. If this happens simply cut back to encourage new leaves to grow.
Avoid overharvesting. Having several plants growing in the garden will give the plants time to recover in between harvests.

TIP

Remove flowers regularly to encourage more leaf growth.
