Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Scatter the cress seeds over the surface (to give an idea of sowing density aim to sow seeds approx. 0.5 - 1 cm apart). The compost or kitchen towel must be kept moist but not sodden otherwise the seeds will rot. Lightly spray the surface with water on a regular basis. Paper towels tend to dry out faster than compost. To help keep the surface moist, after sowing cover the seeds with a layer of paper.
Place the container in a warm location (room temperature is fine) and keep away from direct sunlight at this point. In 2 - 4 days the seeds should germinate. As soon as germination starts remove the paper cover and move the container to a location with good daylight exposure, a windowsill is ideal.

Direct Sowing

During the warmer months scatter the seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost or soil (approx. 0.5 - 1 cm apart)
The compost must be kept moist but not sodden otherwise the seeds will rot. Lightly spray the surface with water on a regular basis. To help keep the surface moist, after sowing cover the seeds with a layer of paper.
If the temperature is warm enough, the seeds will germinate in 2 - 4 days. As soon as germination starts remove the paper cover to expose the young seedlings to daylight.

Growing On

Ensure the compost does not dry out.

Harvesting

The cress will be ready to harvest in 7 - 11 days when they are about 5 cm tall. The whole batch can be harvested or if larger leaves are preferred start to thin the young seedlings as and when needed allowing the rest to grow larger. Cut the cress with scissors about 1 - 1.5 cm above the seed level.
To keep the kitchen in good supply of fresh cress sow little and often, every 7 - 10 days.

TIP

No germination - The temperature may be too cold for the seeds to germinate. The seeds may be out of date or has been stored incorrectly.
