Cumin is a member of the parsley family and is grown mostly for its spicy seeds. The mild tangy young leaves however can also be eaten, added to salads and stir-fries etc. This very old herb with its dainty white attractive flowers is one of the main ingredient found in curry pastes and powders. A rewarding herb to grow with seeds that can be stored for a long time. Suitable for growing in containers.

Uses - Aromatic seeds for flavouring.
Add some well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few weeks before sowing. If the soil is heavy clay or the drainage is poor mix in a generous amount of sand and gravel to the soil also. Remove any weeds from the area.

Sow 6 seeds on the surface of moist compost in modules or 7 cm pots.
Lightly cover with fine compost or vermiculite.
Place in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
When the seedling start to appear remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location with good daylight exposure however protect from direct exposure with hot sun at this point. Protect from frost.
Thin each module or pot to 4 strong seedlings.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse until the plants are growing strong.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed. Fleece if the weather is cold.
Harden off over 15 - 20 days before planting out.
Seeds are best started undercover.
Water the young plants well until established.
Cumin plants need a long growing season to produce it's seeds and is best sown early.
Water the plants frequently in dry weather.
The seeds will be ready to harvest in autumn after the flower petals have fallen off and the seed pods start to turn brown.
To dry, cut the stems and place 6 - 8 pods in a paper bag.
Tie the bag closed and hang upside down in a dry, warm location with good ventilation.
When the pods are fully dry rub the paper bag or lightly tap and shake to release the seeds.
Ensure the seeds are completely dry before storing in an airtight container.
Not only is cumin good for it's seeds, the tasty leaves can also be eaten throughout the summer months.
