An earlier sowing will ensure the Delphinium plants are a good size by summer.
Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules. Cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal, leave in a warm location. Or if preferred place in a propagator.
Once the seeds start to germinate remove from the plastic bag or propagator and place in an area with good light exposure and a reduced temperature. Protect from frost and direct hot sun at this point.
When they are large enough to handle transplant into individual 7 - 10 cm pots.
Plant out into their final growing position as soon as the plants are strong and a good size.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days so that they can acclimatize to the outdoor temperatures slowly.
For later sowings - grow the Delphiniums on in pots in a well lit area until they become winter dormant. Over the winter months keep the plants dry and frost free in a greenhouse or garage. Once shoots start to appear again in early spring, water well and move to a well lit area and protect from frost. Plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
For best results start the plants indoors.
Water well until the young plants are established.
To ensue good quality flower spikes, thin the shoots when they are around 10 cm high, leaving 2 - 3 shoots on each plant and 5 - 8 strong shoots on well established Delphiniums.
It is advisable to add supports when the plants are no taller than 30 cm. This should be done carefully so that the stem and roots are not damaged. During the growing season water well and feed with a liquid fertilizer every 2 - 3 weeks.
Once the flower spikes begin to fade, cut back to a level that has healthy living leaves. This will tidy up the plants appearance and it may also encourage new flower spikes to grow. In autumn after the plants have withered cut back all growth to ground level.
All parts of the plant if ingested may cause severe discomfort. Direct contact with foliage can cause skin irritation.
