Gazania Splendens Mixed produces large, daisy-like, bright coloured flowers with dark centred flower heads which close during dull and cold weather. They are very productive and come in a good variety of russet shades. This variety is a half hardy perennial however it is often grown as an annual and is very useful as a summer bedding plant producing a stunning display in the garden over a long season.

To help with moisture retention the plants will benefit from having some organic matter such as compost adding to the soil a few weeks before planting. If the soil is a heavy clay add some course grit or sand to the soil to improve drainage. Remove weeds, especially perennial weeds from the area.

Sow the seeds of Gazania on the surface of damp compost in modules, pots or trays.
Cover the seeds with a light covering of compost or vermiculite.
Place the newly sown seeds in a propagator or a clear plastic bag and seal. Keep the container in a well lit area however away from direct sunlight. Light will help with germination.
After the seeds have started germinating remove the container from the propagator or plastic bag and place in an area with good daylight exposure with a reduced temperature. Keep the young seedlings away from frost.
Once the seedlings are a good size for handling, transplant the seedlings into individual 7 - 10 cm pot.
Grow on in frost free conditions.
When the Gazania plants are strong, plant out into their final growing position when all risk of frost has passed.
To avoid shock harden off the young plants over 7 - 10 days so that they can be introduced to the outdoor temperatures slowly.
For best results start the plants indoors.
Once planted out water frequently until the Gazania plants are growing strong.
They will benefit from a regular feed until they are well established however do not overfeed as these plants will not produce a good amount of flowers if the soil is heavily fertilized.
Dead-head regularly to encourage more flowers to grow.
Avoid growing Gazania's in soils that have had manure recently added as they will not flower well in overly rich conditions.
