Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow geranium seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays, modules or pots.
Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite.
Place the newly sown seeds in a propagator or a clear plastic bag and seal.
The seeds can take a long time to germinate especially if the seeds have not been exposed to a cold spell prior to germination. If after 5 weeks the seeds have still not germinated in warm conditions, place the container in a fridge for 20 days. After this time, return to the propagator or polythene bag and leave to germinate at the germination temperature suggested above.
Once the seedlings are a good size to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a cooler temperature however protect from frost.
When the plants are growing strong, harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out into their final destination.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Once planted out water frequently until the geranium plants are growing strong.
During the growing season the plants will need to be fed every 4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Water regularly especially in hot weather. To encourage more flowers to grow remove any fading flowers and dying foliage regularly.
Cut the plants back if they have become untidy in late summer. Water the plants sparingly during the winter months as they dislike cold wet soils.

TIP

In exposed locations especially, the plants will benefit from having some support such as a few twiggy sticks to prevent the plants from falling over.
