Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For spring sowings - sow hollyhock seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays, modules or pots.
Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of fine compost or vermiculite.
Place the newly sown seeds in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Do not exclude light as this will help germination.
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a cool frost free location until the plants are strong.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to reduce shock.
For autumn sowings - Sow as described above however place the container in a cool greenhouse or cold frame to germinate.
Transplant and grow on over the winter months in a cool frost free, well lit location and plant out the following spring when all risk of frost has passed.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water newly planted hollyhock plants well until established.
In exposed sites the plants will benefit from being staked to help prevent damage from winds.

TIP

If rust is a problem treat hollyhock as an annual or biennial rather than a perennial.
