Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Leeks and celery grow well together.
  • Grow some carrots close by as leeks can help to deter or confuse the carrot fly.
  • Onions and shallots are good companions.

Soil Preperation

Leeks need a fertile and moisture retentive soil with a good amount of well rotted manure of compost added a few months before planting. Add a general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before planting and remove any weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

It is best to start the seeds in a well prepared seedbed.

Direct Sowing

Leek seeds are normally sown in a well prepared seedbed then a few weeks later they are transplanted into their final growing position. Sow 1 seed every 1 - 1.5 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. When large enough to handle thin the seedlings to 3 cm apart. Keep the strongest remove the weaker seedlings.
Weed often to keep competing plants under control as the seedlings at this stage will resemble blades of grass and can be easily smothered by unwanted plants. Water well in dry weather.

Growing On

When the leeks are as thick as a pencil they are ready to be transplanted into their final growing position. Follow the suggested transplant distances above. If the soil is dry water the plants well the day before transplanting to help reduce stress. Leaver the roots out with a trowel, lifting clumps of plants. Carefully divide each plant, try to keep root damage to a minimum. Discard any small weak plants.
Some gardeners choose to trim the root ends at this stage. If the roots are long, trim to around 3 - 4 cm in length with scissors. This will help to ensure the roots are in contact with the bottom of the dibbed hole and prevent any overly long roots from poking out onto the soil surface.
To transplant, make a 12 - 15 cm deep hole with a 2 - 3 cm wide dibber. The dibbed holes in each row needs to be 10cm apart. Drop one leek onto each hole. Fill each hole to the top with water. Do not fill the holes with soil at this point (they will naturally fill up over the growing season). Water the leeks well especially in dry weather. They will benefit from a mulch of compost to help with moisture retention as moisture is very important in the development of leeks.
Weed regularly to keep competing plants under control. The stem part that was dropped into the dibbed hole when transplanting will be white (blanched) because of the exclusion of light. The length of the white stem can be increased further by gently, in stages, drawing some dry soil around the stems, increasing the height a little at a time. This should only be done when the plants are strong and well developed.

Harvesting

Leeks do not have to be left to grow large before eating - smaller baby leeks tend to have a better flavour. Start by harvesting the biggest plants in the row first. If the soil has had a good amount of organic material added it may be possible to gently pull the leeks out of the ground by hand alone. If however when pulling there is some resistance use a spade or fork to help leaver the leeks out to prevent the stems from snapping.
Firm the soil down again after harvesting so as not to disturb the growth of neighbouring leeks. Trim the tops and remove the roots. Winter and spring varieties are very hardy and can withstand severe frosts. They can be left in the ground until they are required.

TIP

The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer, used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.
