Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the mint seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost in trays, modules or pots.
Do not cover the seeds as they need light to germinate.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal, germinate at the temperature suggested above. The germination tends to be erratic and can take a few weeks.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Seeds are best started undercover.

Growing On

Water the newly planted mint well until established.
Water established plants frequently in dry conditions keeping the soil moist at all times. Pot grown mint will need watering more frequently.
It is advisable to grow spearmint in containers as it can become very invasive.
To keep the plants tidy and productive, cut back in autumn.
If growing in containers re- pot in early spring.

Harvesting

The leaves are at their best before the plants produce their flowers.
Use the leaves fresh, dried or frozen.

TIP
