Sow primula seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays, modules or pots.
Cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Do not exclude light as this will help germination, however avoid direct sunlight.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. High temperatures can hinder germination.
When the seeds start to germinate move to an area with a reduced temperature and good daylight. Protect from frost.
As soon as the young seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 -10 cm pots.
Grow on in a cool frost free location.
Plant out when the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock.
If after 25 days the seeds have not germinated, place the tray in a fridge for 2 - 3 weeks before re-locating in a warm place again. This should simulate a cold wintery spell and will jump start the seeds into germination.
For best results start the plants indoors.
The newly planted primrose's will need to be watered frequently until well established.
Dead-head any fading blooms to encourage more to grow.
Water well in dry weather especially container grown plants.
The plants will benefit from having a generous layer of mulch adding to the surrounding soil in early spring and autumn.
Primrose's can be short lived perennials. To keep the plants productive and to avoid overcrowding, lift and divide the plants every 2 - 3 years in early spring.
