Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Amaranth or clover are great plants for attracting the ground beetle. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.
  • Try growing lavender in containers. When pumpkin plants start to flower position a few lavender plants close by to attract pollinating insects. Move the perennial lavender to other areas of the garden as and when needed.
  • French marigolds attracts pollinators to the area which in turn will pollinate the pumpkin flowers.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees and hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids. The plant can be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.
  • One of the best plants for attracting pollinating insects is the Phacelia. It also attracts aphid eating insects such as ladybirds and lacewings. At the end of the season it can be dug into the soil as a green manure.

Soil Preperation

Add some well rotted manure or compost to the growing area a few months before planting. 1 - 2 weeks before planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer and remove any weeds.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 1 seed on its edge per 5 - 7 cm pot. Ensure adequate heat is available for fast germination. Once germination starts reduce the heat and move the seedlings to a well lit location, a warm windowsill or warm greenhouse is ideal.
2 - 3 weeks after germination plant out. The plants will need hardening off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock. Discard any weak or unhealthy looking plants.
Plant out at the distance suggested above. If the soil is poor with very little organic matter it will be beneficial at this stage to dig a trench about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep for each individual plant to be planted in. Fill the holes with a 50 / 50 mix of rotted manure or compost and soil. Plant out carefully as the stems of the plants are very fragile and easy to snap or damage. Firm the soil around each plant and water well. Cover with horticultural fleece.

Direct Sowing

Pumpkin plants are vulnerable to the cold, it is best to start seeds indoors then a few weeks later plant out.

Growing On

Keep weeds under control. The plants are fast growing, with large leaves, long stems and require plenty of room. Water well in dry weather, water around the base of the plant rather than over the leaves.
They will benefit from a mulch of compost to help retain the moisture in the surrounding soil over the hot summer months. Pumpkin plants will grow long stems and if these stems are allowed to grow over bare soil, they will send down roots. This will allow the pumpkins to grow larger.
To achieve a good sized pumpkin allow between 1 - 3 pumpkins to grow on each plant. The less the number the bigger the fruits can grow. Feed regularly with liquid fertilizer. Comfrey leaves steeped in water for a few days will produce an ideal liquid fertilizer, rich in nutrients ideal for fruiting vegetables.

Harvesting

Pumpkins are best left on the plant to mature and harvested in October or just before the first frosts arrive. For storage purposes it is vital that the area where the fruit stem and fruit meets is not damaged in anyway when harvesting otherwise mould can set in and spoil the pumpkin.
To reduce the chances of damaging this area when harvesting rather than cutting the hard fruit stem, cut the plant stem on either side instead so you are left with a pumpkin with a stem resembling the letter 'T'.
Store the pumpkins as dry as possible and at room temperature. If stored correctly the pumpkins will keep until spring. If you find unripe pumpkins on the plants in October, they will not store well and are best treated like summer squashes and should be eaten soon after harvesting.
This variety is ideal for carving as well as eating.

TIP

The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer which is ideal for fruiting plants.
