  • Mint helps to deter the flea beetle however it is advisable to grow this perennial herb in containers as mint can be very invasive. The containers can be moved around the garden to help protect vulnerable crops as and when needed.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predatory insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • Nasturtiums - aphids are attracted to this plant. Grow these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant. If there are aphids in the area the nasturtiums will help to draw the pests away from the crop

Soil Preperation

Add well rotted manure or compost to the area a few months before sowing. Not only will the added organic matter add valuable nutrients to the soil, it will also help to create a more water retentive soil. Remove any weeds and add some general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Radish grow rapidly, for this reason it is best to sow radish directly into the ground.

Direct Sowing

Sow 1 seed every 2 cm apart at a depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. If brassica pests are a problem cover with fine insect mesh. Over several weeks thin out the young radishes until eventually each remaining radish is about 15 cm apart. Start the thinning process when the radish thinning's are big enough to eat.

Growing On

Weed often, taking care not to disturb the radish roots. Water well in dry weather to prevent the roots from developing a woody texture.

Harvesting

Thinning's can be eaten fresh when the roots are small, however for storage purposes the radish are best left to grow to a larger size, between 10 - 15 cm in diameter before harvesting.
It is advisable to harvest all of the crop by early December. Store in boxes of sand in a shed or garage over the winter months.
Summer varieties are normally eaten raw in salads, larger winter varieties can also be eaten raw, grated in salads, pickled, or cooked in stir fries etc. Winter varieties such as Black Spanish have a stronger flavour and a courser texture.

TIP

Slugs love to nibble on radishes. Remove any slug havens such as stones, weeds etc. and keep the surrounding soil as dry as possible when watering. Slugs and snails dislike dry soils.
