Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Mint helps to deter the flea beetle however it is advisable to grow this perennial herb in containers as mint is very invasive. This can be beneficial as the containers can be moved around the garden to help protect vulnerable crops as and when needed.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predatory insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • Nasturtiums - aphids are attracted to this plant. Grow these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant. If there are aphids in the area the nasturtiums will help to draw the pests away from the crop

Soil Preperation

Add well rotted manure or compost to the area a few months before sowing. Not only will the added organic matter add valuable nutrients to the soil, it will also help to create a more water retentive soil. Remove any weeds and add some general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Radish grow rapidly, for this reason it is best to sow radish directly into the ground.

Direct Sowing

Sow 1 seed every 1 cm at a depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. If brassica pests are a problem cover with fine insect mesh. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 3 cm apart.
Radish are great space fillers, sowing summer varieties between slower maturing vegetables such as parsnips, carrots and brussels sprouts will make good use of empty growing spaces. Sow radish little and often, a fortnightly sowing will supply the kitchen with summer radish over a long season.

Growing On

Weed often, taking care not to disturb the radish roots. Water well in dry weather to prevent the roots from developing a woody texture.

Harvesting

Radish grow rapidly and can be harvested in as little as 4 - 6 weeks from sowing. Summer varieties are normally picked when young. Cherry Belle is at its best when no wider than 2 - 3 cm in diameter.
If summer radish are left to grow large the flavour becomes very hot and fiery and the texture becomes soft with hollow pockets forming in the middle of the roots.

TIP

Slugs love to nibble on radishes. Remove any slug havens such as stones, weeds etc. and keep the surrounding soil as dry as possible when watering. These pests do not like to cross over dry soil.
