Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow one seed in moist compost in 10-15 cm plastic or biodegradable pots at the depth suggested above.
Place the pots in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once the seedlings have emerged remove from the bag or propagator and place in a slightly cooler but not cold location for a few days.
Grow on in a cool frost free greenhouse or cold frame, keeping the compost moist but not sodden.
If the plants outgrow their pots carefully pot on (avoid disturbing the roots as much as possible) into larger pots.
Plant out in July.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days.

Direct Sowing

Not recommended for direct sowing.

Growing On

Water newly planted rhubarb well until established.
Established plants will need watering frequently during dry periods.
The leaves naturally die back in autumn. Remove any remaining stems.
The plants will benefit from an annual thick mulch of well rotted manure applying around each crown in autumn.
Over the winter months bugs and worms will gradually incorporate this valuable organic matter into the surrounding soil.

Harvesting

Do not harvest ANY stems during the first year so that the plants energy can go into building up strong roots rather than replenishing stems.
During the second spring, rhubarb stems can be harvested for up to 6 - 8 weeks.
On the third year onwards stems can be harvested for up to 2 - 3 months a year.
Avoid harvesting after June. The plants need time to replenish their energy and concentrate on growing larger roots and reserves for the following year.
To harvest, simply hold the stem at its base and gently twist the rhubarb stick free from the crown.
Avoid overharvesting. Leave at least 5 stems on the plants at all times during the harvesting period. This will allow the plants to recover and ensure more stems grow back promptly ready for the next harvest.

TIP

Remove all flower stalks to prolong the harvesting season.
