Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the sage seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost in trays, modules or pots.
Lightly cover with some fine compost.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal, germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Germinate indoors for best results.

Growing On

Water the young plants well until established.
When established the plants need little attention however water in very dry conditions. Pot grown plants will need watering more frequently.
Prune established plants in late spring with garden shears to encourage new growth and to keep the plants tidy and compact.

Harvesting

Harvest the larger leaves as and when needed.
The leaves can be eaten fresh, dried or frozen for later use.

TIP

If growing in pots add a good amount of stones to the bottom of the container as sage dislikes wet feet and prefers dryish, well drained soil. During the growing season feed the pot grown herb with a general purpose fertilizer every 4 - 5 weeks.
