Other Names - Spring Onions, Bunching Onions, Scallion...

This outstanding variety does not produce a bulb but rather grows a long white stalk instead. Ishikura is a perennial variety that will produce over several years and is very hardy and vigorous. The season of harvest is long and therefore does not require successional sowing. The stalks can be harvested young as spring onions or left to grow as thick as 2cm in diameter similar to a leek without any compromise on tenderness or its mild sweet flavour. To achieve extra long sweet flavoured white spring onions simple earth up the stems with some surrounding soil. Ishikura is highly recommended and a worthwhile crop to grow.

  • Award winner - RHS Award of Garden Merit.
  • None bulbing variety producing long white stalks.
  • A perennial variety that will produce over several years.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds, container garden, limited space

Sowing Months - March - early July

Harvest - May - November

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Lettuce and salad onions grow well together.
  • Chamomile and summer savory - these two herbs if grown nearby are believed to improve the growth and flavour of alliums.
  • Beetroot, Kohl rabi, strawberries and cabbages are good plants to grow close to salad onions as they do not compete against each another.
  • The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer, used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.

Soil Preperation

Add well rotted manure or compost a few months before sowing or planting. Remove any weeds and apply some general purpose fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting. Before sowing rake the surface when dry to produce a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Salad onions are best sown direct however for early sowings start indoors in modules. Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts reduce the heat and move to an area with good daylight, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
After 3 - 5 weeks depending on speed of growth plant out. Harden off over a few days before planting out. Plant out at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each clump and water well. Cover with horticultural fleece if frost is forecast.

Direct Sowing

Sow 1 seed every 2 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Lightly cover the seeds with fine soil and water well. Ishikura should not need to be sown in succession as the plants will produce onions over a long season. Thin out the seedlings in stages to achieve a 30 cm distance between each plant. The thinning's can be eaten like salad onions.

Growing On

Weed often as the tall thin plants can easily be smothered by weeds. Water the young seedlings often in dry weather. Older plants will need watering well every 7 - 10 days in dry weather. The plants will benefit from a mulch of compost to help prevent the surrounding soil from drying out in the summer months.

Harvesting

This variety is a perennial and will produce onions for several years. Ishikura can be harvested as spring onions or the stems can be left to grow as thick as leeks. To achieve long white sweet flavoured stems earth up the stems with surrounding soil to blanch the stems.

TIP

Growing a row of salad onions on either side of carrots can help to confuse and deter the carrot root fly.
