If growing outdoors over the winter months cover the crop with a cloche in late autumn. Remove yellowing leaves throughout the season.
Start to harvest spinach when the leaves are small but at a size worth while picking. Pick outer leaves first, they should still be young and tender. Pick regularly to encourage more leaves to grow.
For winter grown spinach avoid removing too many leaves from one plant at one time as the plants might struggle to recover and survive the winter months. A good amount of leaves should be available up until December. Pickings should however be very light during December, January and February as growth will have slowed down or stopped over the colder months. However by early spring the plants should bounce back into life again producing an abundance of juicy tender leaves once again up until early summer.
To avoid damaging the roots when harvesting, cut the leaves with scissors or a sharp knife rather than tugging on them.
Spinach leaves can grow large. Regular pickings will keep the leaves small and tender.
