Other Names - Spinach Substitute…

If the spinach you have grown in the past has constantly bolted because of dry soils or hot weather before you were able to harvest a decent crop try growing the variety New Zealand spinach. This variety is an excellent spinach substitute as it will not bolt in hot weather and will happily tolerate dry soils making this variety much easier and less demanding compared to true spinach. New Zealand spinach is not actually a spinach however the leaf is very similar in flavour and can be cooked in a similar way. It is a very prolific variety and has a spreading habit. Once established one sowing should supply the kitchen with juicy dark green spinach like leaves until the first frosts arrive.

  • Will not bolt in hot weather like true spinach varieties.

  • One sowing should supply juicy green leaves up until the first frosts arrive.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 1 - 2 seeds per 4 cm module. Once germination starts move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. 2 - 4 weeks after germination (depending on speed of growth) plant out. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out especially early sowings. Plant out at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plants and water well.

Direct Sowing

Do not sow too early, New Zealand spinach is a tender plant and will not tolerate frost. Sow 3 seeds per station, 30 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seedlings with soil and water well. If the weather turns cold cover with horticultural fleece.
When the seedlings are big enough to handle, thin to one strong seedling per station. One single sowing, if picked little and often will last throughout the summer months up until the first frost.

Growing On

Water well (deep watering) every 7 - 10 days in dry weather, more often if growing in containers. Weed often to remove competing plants. New Zealand spinach is a trailing plant, trim if it starts to encroach on neighbouring beds. The plant will continue to grow until the first autumn frosts arrive.

Harvesting

Start to pick the leaves when they are a reasonable size. The shoot tips can also be eaten. The removal of these tips will encourage the plant to become more bushy by sprouting side shoots. Leaves can be eaten cooked or raw however some people may find that eating raw New Zealand spinach leaves can cause some irritation. If in doubt cook before eating.

TIP

To extend the harvest cover the plants with a cloche before the first autumn frosts arrive.
