Golden Ball is a round rooted variety with a golden yellow skin and tender sweet flesh. This is one of the best hardy maincrop turnip varieties available. It stores well and is often used on the show bench.

  • Produces golden yellow flesh with a sweet flavour.
  • Very hardy, stores well.
  • One of the best maincrop turnip varieties available.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds, container garden, limited space

Sowing Months - Early August

Harvest - October - December

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Nasturtiums - Cabbage white butterflies are drawn to this flower. Try growing these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant. They will help to draw the pest away from the brassica crop.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) is a magnet for attracting beneficial predator insects into the garden, insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who feast on aphids.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees and hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids. The plant can be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.
  • If flea beetle is a problem try growing a crop of white mustard close by. It can help to draw the flea beetle away from the crop as the pest normally favours this leaf.

Soil Preperation

Add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost a few months before sowing. Lime if necessary as brassicas prefer alkaline soils. Add some general purpose organic fertiliser 1 - 2 weeks before sowing and remove any weeds.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Turnips grow fast. Because of their speed of growth it is best to sow direct.

Direct Sowing

This variety produces larger roots suitable for storing. Sow 2 - 3 seeds per station 10 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above.
Cover the seeds with soil and water well. If brassica pests are a problem cover the crop at this stage with fine mesh. When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to 1 strong seedling per station.

Growing On

Water very well every 7 - 10 days in dry weather (more frequent if growing in containers). Weed often to remove competing plants.

Harvesting

Harvest from October to December. The larger roots can be stored in a frost free shed or garage in sacks or boxes of sand and should keep for 1 - 2 months. Remove any turnip foliage before storing and do not store any small or damaged roots as they will not keep well.

TIP

Mint can help to deter the flea beetle. It is advisable to grow this useful herb in containers as it can be very invasive. Move the containers to different locations in the garden as and when needed.
