Other Names - European Watercress…

Watercress does not require running water to thrive and will happily grow in a container placed in a large saucer of water. It is a vigorous and very productive leaf producing a heavy crop of tender peppery leaves over a long season. The flavour of home grown watercress is far superior to shop bought versions.

  • Can be grown without running water.
  • Fast growing, vigorous and very productive.
  • Produces a superior peppery flavoured leaf compared to shop bought versions.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds, container garden, limited space

Sowing Months - April - early October

Harvest - June - November

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Slugs and snails love watercress, try growing plants nearby that attract the ground beetle, such as amaranth and clover. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.

Soil Preperation

A shady part of the garden with moisture retentive soil is a must when growing watercress. Add a good amount of well rotted manure and compost to the soil and water well. The organic matter will help the soil to retain its moisture. Remove any weeds.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts move to an area with good daylight, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 1 strong seedling per module. Keep the compost damp at all times by sitting the modules in a tray with approx. 1 cm of water. 4 - 6 weeks later (depending on speed of growth) plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out. Firm the soil around each plant and water very well.

Direct Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds 10 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per station.

Growing On

The soil must be kept moist at all times. Water copiously in dry weather. Weed often to keep competing plants under control. If preferred watercress can also be grown in containers. Fill a good sized pot with damp compost and sit the pot in a larger container or a deep saucer. After sowing or planting fill the outer container with water.
Position the pot in a shaded area. As the compost dries out more water will be wicked into the compost from the outer reservoir keeping the condition ideal for the watercress to thrive. Replace the water regularly to avoid it stagnating. Bring the container indoors into a greenhouse or conservatory over the winter months to help protect the plant from severe frosts.

Harvesting

Cut young shoots as required, individually or by cutting a handful of stems at a time with scissors. Regular picking will encourage more shoots to grow. Harvest all of the watercress leaves before any severe frosts arrive as it will not tolerate low temperatures. Watercress will keep in the fridge in a polythene bag for 3 - 5 days however it is at its best when eaten fresh.

TIP

If growing watercress in a container immersed in a water reservoir, the water will need to be renewed regularly to avoid it becoming stagnant.
