Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow aquilegia seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with fine compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a propagator or if preferred in a clear polythene bag and seal. Do not exclude light as light will help improve germination.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and move to a location with good daylight and a reduced temperature. Protect from frost.
When the young seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on until the plants are strong. Plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days so that the young plants can acclimatize to the outdoor temperature slowly.

Direct Sowing

Sow the seeds directly in a well prepared seed bed in spring where the flowers are to grow once all risk of frost has passed. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 30 - 40cm apart.

Growing On

Columbine should not require any additional feeding during the season unless the soil is very poor in fertility.
Water well in dry weather.
These plants are short lived perennials and will reach their peak in their second to third year.
Aquilegia can be divided every 3 years in spring, however they can take some time to recover as they dislike being disturbed. For this reason some growers prefer to sow new seed rather than dividing the plants.
TIP

If the plant is allowed to form seeds this will shorten the life span of the plant. To prolong the lifespan remove spent flowers as soon as possible.
