To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area. The soil will need to be a fine tilth if the seeds are to be sown direct.

Sow aster seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays, pots or modules.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkle of fine compost or vermiculite.
Place in a propagator or cover with a clear polythene bag and seal. Aster's do not require high temperatures to germinate.
Once germination starts remove the container from the propagator or plastic bag and place in a well lit area. Keep away from frost and protect from hot sun at this point.
When the aster seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots and grow on in frost free conditions.
Plant out when all risk of severe frost has passed. Harden off over 7 - 10 days so that the young plants can acclimatise to the outdoor temperatures slowly.
In April - May, sow aster seeds in a well prepared seed bed where they are to flower in rows 30 cm apart when all risk of frost has passed. The soil should have a fine tilth.
Water regularly especially in dry weather.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, start to thin out until eventually they are 30 cm apart.
Water newly planted aster's well until established.
To help retain moisture in the soil, mulch around each plant once established. Apply the mulch within 3 - 5 cm from the stems (making sure the mulch does not touch the stem).
The plants will benefit from a regular feed of a balanced fertilizer every 2 - 3 weeks during the flowering season.
When watering established plants, water around the base of the plants rather than over as damp wet leaves can encourage powdery mildew and other fungal diseases to develop.
Dead-head any spent flowers regularly to promote more blooms to grow.
