A sea of English Bluebells with their rich blue flowers is a common and welcomed springtime sight in both the garden and woodlands. The erect stems with their miniature bell shaped fragrant flowers grow in clumps to form bulbs. They particularly thrive under the dappled shade of trees and favour soils rich in organic matter such as leaf mould, well rotted manure or compost.

Soil Preperation

For Bluebells to thrive they require soil rich in organic matter, such as leaf mould rich soil found under trees. If the soil is lacking in organic matter add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the area before planting.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow bluebell seeds in small pots or trays using a growing mix such as 'John Innes No.2' with a little additional compost mixed in.
Place the containers in a cold frame or greenhouse. Keep the compost moist however do not overwater.
The seeds will start to germinate over the spring and early summer months. However some seeds may not germinate until autumn or the following spring.
Keep the young plants in dappled shade and do not allow to dry out.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into 7 - 10 cm diameter pots.
Return the young plants to the cold frame. Keeping them in dappled shade and keeping the compost moist.
When the plants are a good size (3 cm tall) harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out into their final destination.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

After planting out, water the plants well until established.


If self seeding is not desired remove the flowers as they fade.
