Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Borage dislikes transplanting and therefore is best sown direct.

Direct Sowing

Scatter the seeds over a well prepared seedbed in spring where the plants are to flower. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Lightly rake over to cover the seeds.
Water well.
Thin the seedlings to 30 cm apart.

Growing On

Water young borage plants well until established.
Trim frequently to keep the plants tidy.
Water established plants well in dry weather.
Borage will die back in winter after self seeding. New seedlings will grow again in spring.
Remove any seedlings that are not wanted.

The leaves and flowers can be harvested throughout the summer months.
The leaves freeze well however they do not dry well.

Borage is much loved by bees and other beneficial insects making it an ideal companion plant for growing in the vegetable and fruit garden.
