Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Growing a ground covering crop such as clover around the brassica plants helps to prevent the cabbage root fly laying its eggs at the base of the plants.
  • Nasturtiums are a magnet for many pests, growing these flowers nearby can help to draw the cabbage white butterfly away from the brassica crop.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predator insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • White mustard can help to draw the flea beetle away from the crop as the pest normally favours this leaf. Mint can also help to deter the flea beetle.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees, hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids and can be dug in as green manure to add organic matter to the soil.

Soil Preperation

Add some compost or well rotted manure to the bed a few months before sowing or planting. Remove any weeds and lime if necessary as brassicas prefer alkaline soils. For cabbages to thrive the soil must not be loose. If the bed is newly dug or rotovated tread down on the area to compact the soil. Add some general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. Once the seeds start to germinate reduce the heat and move to an area with good daylight exposure. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per module. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
Plant out 2 - 4 weeks later depending on the speed of growth at the distance suggested above. Harden off over several days before planting out. Firm the soil around each plant and water well. To protect brassica plants from pests cover the crop at an early stage with a fine insect mesh, this will also help to protect against bird damage.

Direct Sowing

Sow cabbage seed in a well prepared seedbed then a few weeks later transplant the seedlings into their final growing position. Sow 1 seed every 2 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. Cover the bed with fine insect mesh at this point to keep birds and any insects away from the young vulnerable seedlings. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 10 cm apart. The sweet tender thinning's are delicious eaten raw in salads or lightly steamed.
The seedlings will be ready to transplant into their final growing position when they have 5 - 6 true leaves. Water the young plants well the day before transplanting to reduce stress. Plant at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well.

Growing On

As the cabbages grow larger ensure the insect mesh does not touch the plants otherwise brassica pests such as the cabbage white butterfly may simply land on the mesh and lay its eggs through the holes and onto the leaves. Weed often to keep competing plants under control. Ensure young plants are watered well and often during dry weather. Larger plants however should be happy with a good watering every 7 - 10 days in hot weather.
In autumn earth up the stems with surrounding soil and tread around each plant to ensure the soil is firm and the plant is secure. During the winter months keep an eye on any loose soil around the stems caused by frost and snow. Brassicas dislike loose soil, tread carefully around each plant to consolidate the soil again if needed.

Harvesting

Harvest cabbages by cutting the stem close to the ground level with a sharp knife. Cabbages can store in the fridge for 1 - 2 weeks. To extend the crop, after harvesting cut a deep cross about 1 - 1.5 cm deep in the remaining stump. In a few weeks time another small cabbage may start to grow from the cut area depending on the temperature.

TIP

The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer, used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.
