Physalis or Cape Gooseberry is a relatives of the common tomato and has a similar growing habit. The bright orange fruits have a similar texture to firm tomatoes with an unique tangy pineapple-like flavour and can be eaten raw, added to salads, jams, eaten with meats or dried. Each golden berry is enclosed in an attractive papery husk like lantern which protect the valuable fruits from pests and allows the berries to be stored for several months.

  • Productive and very easy to grow.
  • Expensive fruits to buy!
  • Can be stored up until Christmas.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost in trays, modules or pots.
Cover the seeds with vermiculite or compost.
Place in a propagator or if preferred a clear polythene bag and seal. Do not exclude light as the physalis seeds need light to germinate. Protect from direct contact with hot sun.
Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and place in a cooler but not cold location (not colder than 15 degrees centigrade)
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a temperature no cooler than 15 degrees centigrade. A few weeks later, repot into larger pots.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed and the golden berry plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 15 - 20 days before planting out to reduce the chance of shock.

Direct Sowing

Not recommended for direct sowing.

Growing On

Water newly planted Inca berries well until established.
If growing outdoors, the plants tend to be less vigorous, this may not be such a bad thing as they can be controlled easier. Indoor grown plants can become very vigorous and large and will require regular trimming to keep the plants tidy and under control.
As the plants grow larger add a few canes to help support the stems.
Pinching out the growing tips will encourage the plants to become more bushy.
If growing in containers especially, the plants will benefit from a regular feeding with a high potash fertilizer.
Water regularly especially if growing in containers however avoid overwatering as these plants do not like sodden, waterlogged conditions.

Harvesting

The fruits can be harvested in autumn after the husks have become brittle and turned colour and the berries are a golden orange colour.

TIP

The fruits can be stored for 2 - 3 months if left in their protective papery husks in a cool dry location.
