Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow carnation seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Firm the seeds into the surface of the compost. Do not cover.
Place the container in a propagator or if preferred in a clear polythene bag and seal. Do not exclude light as light will help to improve germination.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and move to an area with good daylight and a reduced temperature. Protect from frost.
When the young seedling's are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a cool frost free location until the plants are established.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days so that they can acclimatize to the outdoor temperature slowly.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water the newly planted dianthus plants frequently until established.
Avoid overwatering.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer ever 3 - 4 weeks throughout the spring and summer months.
After the flowers have faded remove the flower stems and trim any over - straggly plants.

Dianthus dislike overly wet soils. Ensure the planting location is suitable and that it is not prone to water logging over the winter months.
