Sow carnation seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkle of compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator.
As soon as germination starts remove the container from the propagator or sealed bag and place in a well lit area with a slightly reduced temperature.
Keep the compost moist however the compost should never be sodden.
When the young seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in frost free conditions.
The carnations will be ready to plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to reduce shock.
For best results start the plants indoors.
Water the newly planted carnations well until established.
The plants will benefit from a regular feed of a balanced fertilizer on the run up to flowering.
Once the buds start to develop feed regularly with a high potash fertilizer.
The flowers will benefit from being staked especially in exposed areas.
Water well during dry spells. However avoid overwatering as this may turn the foliage yellow.
To promote continued blooming dead-head as soon as the flowers have past their best.
