2000 Seeds.

Other Names - Celery Root…

Celeriac or celery root is an easy vegetable to grow and tastes distinctly like celery with the added bonus of being much easier to grow and can be stored overwinter. The root of the Giant Prague celeriac grows to a good size and has a slightly flattened base. Delicious when mashed with some potatoes with a little butter salt and pepper.

  • A reliable heritage variety that tastes similar to celery.
  • Much easier to grow compared to celery.
  • Stores well overwinter.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds

Sowing Months - March - May

Harvest - October - December

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Try intercropping celeriac with salad onions, shallots and onions as the carrot root fly can be deterred or confused by the strong smells of the allium family.
  • Amaranth or clover are great plants for attracting the ground beetle. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.
  • Bush French beans - Grow well next to each other.
  • Leeks - A good companion to grow next to celeriac.
  • The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer, used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.

Soil Preperation

Fertile moisture retentive soil is essential for growing celeriac. Add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost a few months before planting (the previous autumn is ideal). Add some organic general purpose fertilizer to the bed 1 - 2 weeks before planting.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

To achieve a good sized root celeriac must be sown indoors in early March - April. Celeriac seeds are tiny. Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. Do not cover the seeds. To help prevent the compost drying out cover the modules with clear plastic or a sheet of glass (allow some room for the seedlings to start emerging). Celeriac seeds take a long time to germinate, as soon as germination starts remove the clear cover, reduce heat and move to an area with good daylight exposure.
As soon as the seedlings are big enough to handle thin out to one strong seedling per module. When the plants are 6 - 8 cm high they will be ready to plant out. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock. Plant the celeriac at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well. If there is any risk of frost, cover with horticultural fleece

Direct Sowing

It is not advisable to sow direct in the soil.

Growing On

Remove weeds especially in the early stages. As the plants mature the leaves should help to reduce weed seed from germinating by blocking out the sunlight. Celeriac must have adequate water to produce a good size root. Water well in dry spells. A thick mulch of compost will benefit the plants not only in adding some more nutrients but also in helping to prevent the surrounding soil from drying out in hot weather.
The root grows mostly above soil level. Some gardeners like to remove all of the lower leaves, believing that this helps with root swelling. From our experience we have found that cutting the lower leaves makes very little difference to the growth of the root. It does however make the plant look prettier.

Harvesting can begin in early October, perhaps September if the weather has been wet. If grown in a sheltered area and the winter is mild the roots can be left in the ground to overwinter protected by a generous layer of straw or horticultural fleece. However, if the soil is heavy clay and the site is exposed it is a good idea to harvest all of the roots in November and store indoors for later use. Dig out the roots with the help of a spade or trowel.
For storing, celeriac roots should not be over trimmed. Cut the foliage off, trim the root sparingly with a sharp knife leaving a thin layer of soil on the root to help keep it moist and firm during storage. Celeriac can be stored in a frost free garage or shed in paper bags or boxes surrounded with damp compost.

As the majority of the celeriac root is above ground . All roots should be harvested before any severe frosts arrive to prevent damage.
