  • Amaranth or clover are great plants for attracting the ground beetle. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.
  • Leeks are a good companion plant to grow next to celery.
  • Bush French beans and celery grow well next to each other.
  • Cauliflower and cabbages are well suited companions.

Soil Preperation

Add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the bed a few month before planting. Remove any weeds and add some general purpose organic fertilizer a week before planting. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of damp compost in a seed tray, cover with clean polythene or glass to retain moisture. Do not cover the tiny seeds. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater. When the seedlings start to emerge move to an area with good daylight exposure and remove the clear covering. 4 - 5 weeks later prick out the strongest seedlings into 4 cm modules. The compost must not be allowed to dry out.
When the young plants have 3 - 4 true leaves plant out into their final growing position. Plant at the distance suggested above. Self blanching varieties must be planted in square blocks rather than in a single row. By doing this the crowded plants will shade each others stems from direct sunlight, keeping the stems a pale colour and less bitter in flavour. Firm the soil around each plant and water well.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the seeds indoors.

Growing On

The roots of celery plants are very shallow and therefore will need watering regularly especially in dry weather. To help with moisture retention in the soil, mulch the bed with compost before the hot summer days arrive. Celery is a hungry crop and will benefit from a regular liquid feeding with a balanced fertilizer.

Harvesting

Self blanching varieties can be harvested as required however they are best eaten when young. All of the self blanching varieties will need to be picked before the first autumn frosts arrive as they are not hardy. Harvest the outer plants first in the block, lifting the whole plant, taking care not to disturb its neighbours. Celery will store in the fridge in a polythene bag for 2 - 3 weeks.

TIP

The leaves of the comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer ideal for giving celery a nutrient boost.
