Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 4 - 5 seeds on the surface of moist compost in 4 cm modules or small pots.
Lightly cover the seeds with compost or vermiculite.
Place in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and position in a cooler but not cold location with good daylight exposure, however protect from direct exposure to hot sun at this point.
When germination has finished grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame until the young plug plants are strong. Chervil have delicate roots and should be planted out well before they become pot bound.
Harden off before planting out into their final growing position.
September sown plants for winter harvests will need protection over the winter months and will need to be either planted out into a larger pot for the kitchen windowsill, greenhouse, polytunnel, cold frame or under a cloche.

Direct Sowing

In March - August, sow the seeds direct into a well prepared seedbed. The soil should be a fine tilth. Sow the seeds 1 cm apart in rows 30 cm wide at the depth suggested above.
Water well.
Thin the seedlings eventually to 30 cm apart. The larger thinning's can be eaten.

Growing On

Young chervil plants will need watering well until established, however avoid overwatering.
Chervil dislikes dry soils and will produce more leaves if kept in the shade especially over the hot summer months. If growing in pots simply move the plants to a shaded area as and when needed.
Keep the soil moist at all times to help prevent the plants running to seed. If growing undercover over the winter months, reduce the watering especially on dull, cold days.

Harvesting

Harvest by picking the larger leaves at the bottom of the plants regularly.
If the plants become untidy, cut across the whole clump with sharp scissors or garden shears about 5 cm above soil level. If the weather is warm a new flush of fresh new leave will grow again.
The leaves can be frozen for later use.

TIP

Sow the seeds in succession from March to August for a regular supply of fresh leaves.
