Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 3 - 4 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as the seeds start to germinate move to an area with good daylight, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 1 strong seedling per module.
2 - 3 weeks later plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over a few days before planting out. Plant at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well around the base of the plants keeping the surrounding soil as dry as possible to help ward off slugs and snails. Cover the vulnerable crop with some fine insect netting.

Direct Sowing

Chinese cabbage is a magnet for slugs and snails as well as other brassica pests. Because of this it is advisable to start the plants indoors in a controlled pest free environment, and plant them out when they are stronger and less vulnerable.

Growing On

Chinese cabbage can be grown over the summer months, however they are more prone to insect damage during this time. A late summer or autumn sowing will have a better chance of surviving. It is highly advisable to grow this vegetable under fine insect netting.
Chinese cabbage is fast growing and will need a good amount of water in dry weather. Weed regularly to keep competing plants under control.

Harvesting

Harvesting can begin in September or October and all of the plants should be picked before the first frosts arrive as they are vulnerable to frost damage. Cut the heart with a sharp knife just above soil level. Trim off any outer leaves, leaving a tight heart.
Chinese cabbage with tight hearts can be stored up until December in a cool frost free environment.

TIP

Chinese cabbage is much loved by slugs and snails. Keep the surrounding area free from weeds. Avoid growing this vegetable in locations where these pests can easily hide, areas such as walls, piles of stones etc.
