Other Names - Silver Ragwort, Dusty Miller…

The silvery leaves of Cineraria Cirrus offer an excellent background to enrich the colour of dark or brightly coloured flowers such as petunias, begonias and salvias. This shrubby perennial may survive the winter in the southern counties and the Midlands however it is usually grown as a half hardy annual summer bedding plant. The oval non-serrated leaves change colour from silvery-green to silvery-white as the plants mature and are excellent for use as dot plants or edging plants.

  • Produces mounds of felted silvery-grey leaves.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow cineraria seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkle of compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. Do not exclude light as this will help the seeds to germinate. Avoid direct exposure with hot sun at this point.
As soon as germination starts remove the container from the propagator or sealed bag and place in a well lit area with a slightly reduced temperature.
Keep the compost moist however the compost should never be sodden.
When the young seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in frost free conditions.
The cineraria will be ready to plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to reduce shock.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water the newly planted cineraria well until established.
Trim established plants if necessary to improve their shape.
If the plants survive over the winter months they will flower in their second year. Remove the mustard coloured flowers as soon as they appear.

TIP

Cineraria dislike waterlogged conditions as this can lead to rotting. Avoid overwatering.
