Cirsium Pink Beauty produces pastel pink flowers 2 - 3 cm across. The early flowers either grow singly or grow in small clusters with dark green prickly leaves. The virtually thorn less strong stems make this an excellent variety for cutting. Cirsium is a perennial however it is usually grown as an annual.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Cover with a light covering of compost.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. Avoid direct exposure with hot sun at this point.
As soon as germination starts remove the container from the propagator or sealed bag and place in a well lit area with a slightly reduced temperature.
The compost should be kept moist however never waterlogged.
When the young seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in frost free conditions until the plants are strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to reduce shock.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Young plants will need to be watered well until established.
Water established plants regularly in dry weather.
To grow cirsium as a perennial the plants will need protecting from severe frosts and snow if they are to survive the winter.


Dead-head if you prefer the plants not to self seed as they can become very invasive.
