The annual Clary Oxford Blue has an erect bushy habit with hairy almost woolly mid-green coloured leaves. It's spikes of violet-blue bracts with it's darker coloured veins particularly look good in wildlife gardens, informal gardens or used as bedding plants and are an excellent choice for cutting or for drying.

Soil Preperation
To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide
Early Sowing/Module Sowing
Sow clary seeds on the surface of moist compost in trays, pots or modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with some compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a propagator or if preferred cover with a clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination starts remove from the propagator or bag and locate in a well lit area with a reduced temperature however protect from frost and avoid direct contact with hot sun.
The compost should be kept moist however never waterlogged.
When the seedling have grown large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5 cm pots.
Grow on in frost free conditions, a greenhouse or cold frame is ideal.
Plant out when the clary plants are strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.
Direct Sowing
Sow direct in April - May where the plants are to grow, in rows 15 - 20 cm apart. The seed bed should be well prepared and the soil should be a fine tilth.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 15 - 20 cm apart.
Growing On
Water newly planted clary well until established.
The plants will benefit from a monthly feed of a balanced fertilizer.
Water the plants deeply during hot dry weather.
Dead-head regularly if you prefer the plants not to self seed.
