Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 3 - 4 seeds at the depth suggested above in 4 cm modules or small pots.
The compost should be moist but not sodden.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. This will provide a humid and warm environment. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
Plant out a few weeks later when the plug plants are strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over several days before planting out.
September sowings for winter harvesting will need to be grown undercover in a greenhouse, polytunnel, windowsill, cold frame or under a cloche.
For growing on a kitchen windowsill, plant 2 - 3 of the young plug plants into a 1 litre pot.

Direct Sowing

Sow the seeds in a well prepared seed bed, 2 - 3 cm apart in rows 30 cm wide at the depth suggested above. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Water the newly sown seeds well.
Thin in stages until eventually the young plants are 25 cm apart. The thinning's can be eaten.

Growing On

Water young plants well until established.
Coriander can easily run to seed if the conditions are dry. Keep the soil or compost moist at all times.
When flower stems appear the leaves become soft and feathery in appearance but are still edible and tasty at this point.
To prolong the leaf harvest for a little longer remove the flower stems when they appear.

Harvesting

The harvesting of leaves can start as soon as the plants are established and growing strong. A frequent picking of leaves will help to prolong the harvest period. Picking the edible flower stalks will also prolong the harvest.
To harvest, cut the outer stems with scissors or a sharp knife 3 - 5 cm above the soil. Avoid over harvesting as the plants may struggle to recover.
For winter harvesting, the older leaves can be picked occasionally throughout the winter months, depending on the speed of growth. A mild spell in winter will encourage fresh new leaf growth. Avoid overharvesting. For seeds, allow the flowers to form seed pods which at the end of summer will have ripened and started to turn brown.
Snip the stems just under each pod. Place in a paper bag, tie the bag and hang in a warm, dry location with good ventilation for 2 - 3 weeks. The dry seed pods can be rubbed between the thumb and finger to release the seeds. Remove any leafy debris mixed in with the seeds by simply blowing them away.
Store the dry seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place until needed.
For seeds, allow the flowers to form seed pods which at the end of summer will have ripened and started to turn brown.

TIP

Sow coriander seeds in succession every 3 - 4 week from March - July for a constant supply of fresh leaves.
