Cornflower Black Ball produces excellent quality double flowers with long strong stems. The flowers are a dark brown chocolate colour. This ball strain looks stunning growing in clusters amongst contrasting plants in the summer beds or containers.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Autumn sowings will produce early flowers the following year and should be sown undercover.
Cornflower dislike their roots being disturbed, for this reason it is advisable to sow the seeds in biodegradable pots.
Sow the seeds on the surface of damp compost. Lightly cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite.
Place the containers in a propagator or if preferred a clear plastic bag and seal. Do not exclude light as this will help germination.
Once the seeds start to germinate remove from the propagator or bag and place in a well lit area with a reduced temperature. Protect from frost and exposure to hot sun at this point.
Thin to 1 strong seedling. Grow on in frost free conditions and plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Autumn sown cornflowers should be left to overwinter in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame until the following spring. Do not allow the compost to dry out however avoid overwatering.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to reduce the chances of shock.

Direct Sowing

Sow direct in March - May where the plants are to grow in rows 25 - 30 cm apart. The seed bed should be well prepared and the soil should be a fine tilth.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 25 - 30 cm apart.

Growing On

Water the plants regularly until established.
Avoid over fertilizing the cornflowers as this can lead to less flower production and more leaf growth.
Water established plants regularly during dry weather.

TIP

Dead-head spent flowers to encourage more blooms to grow.
