Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Sow the seeds thinly, outdoors in April to May in a well prepared seed bed in rows 35 cm apart were the flowers are to grow. The soils should be a fine tilth.
Lightly cover the seeds with some fine soil and water well.

The stronger thinning's can be replanted elsewhere in the garden.
Water thinning's well.

Growing On

Water the young cosmos well until established.
When they are 15 - 20 cm tall pinch out the growing tip. This will encourage stems to branch out and allow more flowers to grow.
Avoid over fertilizing as this can result in poor flower production.
Water established plants well in dry weather.
These tall varieties will need staking to prevent damage from winds. In exposed areas especially it is advisable to also grow these tall varieties closer together in groups as this will allow the leaves to interlock and will help the plants support each other.
