Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • French marigolds will attract pollinators to the area which in turn will pollinate the courgette flowers.
  • Try growing lavender in containers. When courgette plants start to flower position a few lavender plants close by to attract pollinating insects. Move the perennial lavender to other areas of the garden as and when needed.
  • Borage is an easy to grow cucumber tasting herb. The pretty blue flowers attract bees and pollinating insects into the garden and is often used by bee keepers.
  • The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer ideal for giving a nutrient boost to fruiting plants.
  • One of the best plants for attract pollinating insects is the Phacelia. It also attracts aphid eating insects such as ladybirds and lacewings. At the end of the season it can be dug into the soil as a green manure.

Soil Preperation

Add some well rotted manure or compost to the growing area a few months before planting. 1 - 2 weeks before planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer and remove any weeds.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 1 seed on its edge per 5 - 7 cm pot. Ensure adequate heat is available for fast germination. Once germination starts reduce the heat and move the seedlings to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or warm greenhouse is ideal. 2 - 3 weeks after germination plant out. The plants will need hardening off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock. Discard any weak or unhealthy looking plants. Plant out at the distance advised above.
If the soil is poor with very little organic matter it will be beneficial at this stage to dig a trench about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep for each individual plant and fill the trenches with a mix of soil and well rotted manure or compost. The stems of the plants are very fragile and very easy to snap or damage. Plant out carefully, firm the soil around each plant and water well. Cover the newly planted courgette plants with horticultural fleece for 2 - 3 weeks or until the plants start to flower.

Direct Sowing

Courgette plants are vulnerable in cold weather. It is best to start seeds indoors then a few weeks later plant out.

Growing On

Weed often especially in the early stages. Once the plants start to flower remove the horticultural fleece. The plants are fast growing, with large leaves, long stems and require plenty of room. Water well in dry weather, water around the base of the plants rather than over the leaves. They will benefit from a mulch of compost to help retain the moisture in the surrounding soil.
Container grown courgettes will especially benefit from a liquid feed as they are heavy feeders. Try making your own organic liquid feed using the leaves of the comfrey plant. This easy to grow plant makes nutrient dense fertilizer ideal for the vegetable garden. Courgettes will stop growing when the first autumn frost kills the leaves.

Harvesting

Courgette flowers are edible and a delicacy often seen in high end restaurants where they are often stuffed and lightly fried. The first courgettes are normally small and miss shaped. Pick the first fruits when they are small to encourage new and better fruits to grow. Harvest by using a sharp knife, leave 2 - 3 cm of stem when cutting as they will store for longer.
Courgettes can be eaten at any size, as baby vegetables or as a larger sized fruit. However the larger the fruit the dryer and less firm the texture. Courgette plants are very prolific especially the traditional long green varieties. Keep harvesting to encourage more fruits to grow.
Courgette store in the fridge for 1 - 2 weeks but are best eaten fresh. These plants can be very prolific if you find yourself with a glut of fruits try freezing them for later use, they will be much appreciated during the winter months. To freeze - cut into 1 cm slices, blanch for 2 minutes, drain and pat dry. Freeze in polythene bags, use within 12 month.

TIP

No fruit or rotting fruit? - This happens when the temperature in early summer is too cold for adequate pollination to take place. Once the temperature warms up the problem should correct itself.
