Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow cowslip seeds on the surface of moist compost with some gritty sand added to the mix in pots, trays or modules.
Cover with a thin layer of grit.
Place the containers in a shaded cold frame or cold greenhouse.
The seeds will germinate in the spring, some however may take longer to germinate.
When the young seedling's are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots. Place the remaining un-germinated seeds back in the cold frame to germinate at a later date.
Grow on in a sheltered cold frame or cold greenhouse. Protect from frost.
Plant out when the cowslip plants are well established in the summer of their first year or the following spring if preferred. Do not plant out in the colder months.
Harden off over several days before planting out so that the plants can acclimatise to the outdoor temperature.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water the newly planted cowslips' frequently until established.
In autumn and early spring the plants will benefit from a generous layer of mulch.
Cut back once the plants have finished flowering.
Every two years the plants should be divided in early spring.

The soil around cowslip plants should not be allowed to dry out. Water established plants very well especially in dry weather.
