Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention and fertility the plants will benefit from having a good amount of organic matter such as well rotted manure, leaf mould or compost adding to the soil a few weeks before sowing or planting. Remove weeds, especially perennial weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

In January - April, September - October, sow the seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays or pots.
Lightly press the seeds into the soil but do not cover with compost.
Place the newly sown seeds in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Do not exclude light as this will help germination.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and move to a location with good daylight exposure. Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm diameter pots. Grow on in cooler (frost free) conditions.
Plant out into their final growing position after all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

Sow direct from May - August. The soil will need to have been well prepared in advanced. Scatter the seeds evenly over the surface of the soil. Use the back of a spade to gently press the seeds into the surface, however do not cover. Keep the area moist especially during hot weather. Thin the seedlings to 30 cm apart. Thinning's can be transplanted elsewhere in the garden.

Growing On

Water newly planted creeping thyme regularly until established.
When the plants are young, pinch out the growing tips of each stem. This will encourage the plants to become bushier.

TIP

Creeping Thyme can be used as an attractive alternative to a grass lawn (with of course the added advantage of not needing to be mowed!)
