Dahlia Unwins Dwarf Hybrids have semi - double flower heads about 10 cm across in a wide range of bright colours including red, white, yellow and pinks. This half hardy perennial variety is ideal for use as a bedding plant and is normally grown as an annual.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention the plants will benefit from having a good amount of organic matter such as well rotted manure or compost added to the soil a few weeks before planting. Remove weeds, especially perennial weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow dahlia seeds on the surface of damp compost in pots, trays or modules.
Cover with a thin layer of fine compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal, leave in a warm location or if preferred place in a propagator.
Once the seeds start to germinate remove from the bag or propagator and position in a location with good daylight exposure and a reduced temperature. Keep the seedlings away from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into individual 7.5 cm diameter pots.
Grow on in a warm location.
Plant out into their final growing position when the plants are strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days to acclimatise the plants to the outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water the newly planted dahlia's frequently until established. They will benefit from a weekly liquid feed of a high nitrogen fertilizer in early summer.
From mid summer to early autumn feed weekly with a high - potash fertilizer. Water well during the summer months as dahlia's do not like dry conditions.
To protect the plants from wind damage especially in exposed areas stake the stems as they grow taller. The plants can be very productive. Dead-head regularly to encourage more flowers to grow.
Dahlia's are perennials however they are often grown as annuals where new plants are grown from seeds every spring. To grow dahlia's as perennials, in milder areas the tubers can be simply left in the ground to overwinter after being covered with a thick dry mulch in autumn. However if in doubt and particularly if growing in colder climates, lift the tubers from the ground in autumn and store indoors in a frost free location until the following spring when they can be divided and re - planted outdoors.

TIP

Pinch out the growing shoots early in the season to encourage the plants to form a bushy shape.
