Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds on the surface of moist compost in 4 cm modules or small pots.
Lightly cover with fine compost or vermiculite.
Place in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
When the seedling start to appear remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location with good daylight exposure however protect from direct exposure with hot sun at this point. Protect from frost.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse until the plants are growing strong.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed or when the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 14 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Thinly scatter the seeds over a well prepared seedbed where the plants are to flower. Or if preferred sow 1 seed every 1 - 2 cm in rows 30 cm apart. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Lightly cover the seeds with soil and water well.
Thin the seedlings until the plants are eventually 30 cm apart. The thinning's can be eaten.

Growing On

Water the young plants well until established.
Water established plants well in dry conditions. Container grown plants will need watering more often.

Harvesting

Harvesting of leaves can start as soon as the plants are large enough and are growing strong. Pick the larger leaves whole. The flower buds can also be eaten.
To keep the plants producing leaves for longer remove flower heads as they appear. The seeds can be dried and used in a pepper grinder or used whole in cooking.
To preserve the seeds simply allow some of the flowers to open and start to turn brown at the end of the growing season. Snip the flower heads off with a short length of stem, tie several together and place in a paper bag. Tie the bag and hang upside down to dry in a cool, dry location with good ventilation. When dry shake the bag to release the seeds.
Store the dry seeds in an airtight container in a cool dark location for later use.
The seeds can be dried and used in a pepper grinder or used whole in cooking.
To preserve the seeds simply allow some of the flowers to open and start to turn brown at the end of the growing season.

TIP

Flowers will significantly reduce leaf growth. For a continuous crop of leaves sow in successions every 4 weeks from March - July.
