Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost in pots, trays or modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with compost, water well.
Place the container in a propagator or if preferred in a clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and move to a location with good daylight exposure and a reduced temperature (but still warm). Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm diameter pots. Grow on in cooler (frost free) conditions. Pot on into a larger pot if required.
Plant out into their final growing position after all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

When the flowers start to fade, cut back the flower stems to encourage a second flush of blooms.
If areas become overcrowded with Echinops, lift, divide and re-locate in autumn or spring.

TIP

The handsome flower globes can be cut and dried for winter decoration.
